Holistic Fall Skincare

Featuring Neal’s Yard Remedies

Written by: Kelsey Schiavon

Skin can be finicky. Its delicate balance is affected by so many things: stress, diet, product sensitivities, and even seasonal changes can create imbalances that leave your skin looking dull, dry and irritated. Luckily, as we move into fall, there are a few easy steps you can take to ensure you don’t lose that beautiful summer glow.

SWITCH IT UP

Excess water (especially hot water) can strip the skin of the natural oils that protect and nourish it in the drier seasons. Your best bet? Put down your gel cleanser and try a milky one to balance your skin’s natural oil production–without leaving you high and dry. I love using our Frankincense Refining Cleanser for a nourishing skin treat – simply massage into skin and remove with our organic muslin cloth. It’s absolutely packed with skin loving ingredients like vitamin C rich baobab oil, cocao butter, frankincense and myrrh!

Tip: Hot water can be very drying and irritating for the skin, so to keep it looking its best this fall use only cool to lukewarm water when cleansing (yes, even in the shower!).

EXFOLIATE

Clear away dead skin cells with weekly exfoliation to ensure your serums, oils, and moisturizers are performing at their best. Look for natural exfoliants like wild rosehip seed powder, lotus seed powder, and rice powder that gently exfoliate without irritating sensitive skin. Your best bet? Exfoliate 1-2x/week to stimulate microcirculation and remove dead skin cells so your oils, serums and moisturizers can work more effectively!

Tip: Say no to plastic microbeads! I believe that plastic has no place in my personal care products, in the ocean or in our food chain. In our Rehydrating Rose Facial Polish you’ll find gently exfoliating wild rosehip seed powder as well as a host of other skin saving ingredients like antioxidant rich milk thistle, cooling aloe vera and radiance boosting damask rose.

GET OILY

Don’t be scared of oil! Contrary to popular belief, high quality, skin appropriate plant oils do not create more oil. In fact, they can actually help balance your skin’s oil production and reduce congestion. Plant oils high in essential fatty acids will deeply nourish the skin, and support the structure of skin cells, leaving you with naturally plump and hydrated skin. This is why I always reach for my Wild Rose Beauty Balm when the weather turns cold. Full of delicious, skin loving oils like rosehip, jojoba, hemp and borage, combined with rich shea butter and beeswax to help seal in moisture while still allowing your skin to breath.

Tip: Use it for literally everything. Remove makeup, cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, mask, etc… the possibilities are endless! My favourite way to use it is as a deeply nourishing overnight moisturizer – expect to wake up in the morning with beautiful, glowing skin!

TREAT IT RIGHT

Weekly masks are a chance to not only treat your skin to potent, radiance boosting ingredients—but to kindness. Because taking time out for self-care will help you feel great from the inside out. Although we sometimes forget, skin is a dynamic organ that can be sensitive to external factors like seasonal change, meaning as we transition into fall, it’s not uncommon for skin to respond! This year, instead of worrying about imbalances – treat your skin with the kindness it deserves! One of my favourite ways to treat my skin is with our Rejuvenating Frankincense Firming Mask! Filled with radiance boosting ingredients like marine algae, hyaluronic acid, gotu kola and frankincense to help nourish skin – from the outside, in!

Tip: Add 1 drop of soothing rose essential oil to a nickel sized amount of mask. Mix in well and apply to clean (freshly exfoliated) skin. Since this mask is so gentle and hydrating, you can leave it on for as long as you like (even overnight!). We love using it right before any big events to give our skin a little boost!

Thank you so much for reading! Now tell me, what are your favourite tips for beautiful skin year round? I’d love to hear!
